Who can use School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES)?

The SLES program is funded for up to two years by the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), starting in Year 12. SLES is currently available in Mount Gambier.

How does it work?

Finishing school and getting a job is an important part of growing up. We know that sometimes for school leavers it can be hard to decide which type of job they'd like to do. Cara can help as a registered provider of School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES). SLES is an NDIS support that can help young people with disability to get the skills they need to get their first job.

Cara offers individualised and group support to help school leavers as they move from school to a job. They'll learn important skills and take part in work experience.

Cara staff will work with school leavers, their family and other key people, providing assistance to identify job goals and increase skills and confidence. The Cara SLES program is built around the  needs of the individual. Our SLES customers will work one-on-one with Cara staff and learn in a group with other people.

Through SLES, Cara can provide support in a range of areas to help school leavers with disability become job ready, including:

  • Identifying interests and skills

  • Job skills training

  • Communication and social skills

  • Transport training

  • Customer service

  • Money management

  • Time management

  • Work experience opportunities with local businesses

  • Numeracy and literacy

  • Workplace behaviour

  • Health and safety in the workplace

  • Interview skills and preparing a resume

  • Personal grooming and presentation

Work experience

Cara's SLES program gives participants opportunities to take part in work experience in open employment, and experience different jobs to see what they like and what would suit them. We work with local and regional companies, and support our customers throughout their work experience placement.

How does the NDIS fund SLES?

For Year 12 school leavers, SLES is available as a reasonable and necessary support.
